Mountain bike signing and depiction of the degree of difficulty: As with ski pistes, mountain bike routes are divided by degrees of difficulty. As ArberLand is a medium height mountain area, the criteria are different from a high mountain region.
The degree of difficulty helps a cyclist to choose the route to take and the type of equipment to use.
The guidelines by which the mountain bike routes are graded are not laid down by law but are the gradings used in ArberLand to distinguish between blue, red, black and yellow routes.
BLUE ROUTES: easy
Mountain bike routes which can be ridden in part on ordinary bikes. Routes with a good surface (fine gravel, asphalt or similar). On short routes there is a maximum gradient of 10% on uphills and downhills, although there are sometimes continuous uphills.
Family friendly tours are shown separately.
RED ROUTES: medium difficulty
Require sports cycling skills and particularly defensive cycling. Mountain bike equipment is recommended. Gradients are between 5% and 12%, with short distances up to 17%.
There are some hidden, bendy stretches. Expect some stretches where cars need to take up the whole width. Generally, the surfacing, drainage, enclosure, safety (lack of fencing) and warnings of danger apply only to commercial vehicles such as tractors and lorries. This can result in dangerous sections for cyclists. The routes may be closed because of commercial activities (e.g. tree felling and removal), goods may be stored on the route as well as vehicles and danger from natural causes should also be expected.
BLACK ROUTES: difficult
Demanding mountain bike routes with numerous dangers, which requires suitable, anticipatory cycling as well as excellent fitness and mountain bike equipment. The character of the route is more different than the red routes and includes extreme gradients.
SINGLE TRAIL: extremely difficult
Extreme and challenging routes, not usable by motorised traffic. Weather can often make these routes difficult to navigate. No safety measures such as railings, very steep. Expect obstacles such as steps, roots and rocks. Not always passable, partly dependent on ability, with stretches of banking and cycle carrying.
