Well Prepared for a Tour: Tools, Clothing and Provisions

Mountainbikerinnen beim Training am Geißkopf

Make sure that your mountain bike tour through ArberLand is not spoilt by a flat tyre, a broken chain or a sudden change in weather: use our checklist for coping with emergencies.

It usually happens at the worst possible time: Deep in the dark Bavarian Forest, a tyre gets a puncture, with no other cyclist in sight.

Important Tools and Spare Parts
Make sure you have the following tools and spares always to hand:

•    Spare inner tyre
•    Tyre lever
•    Repair kit
•    Mini tool kit in the most important sizes on your bike including a chain tool
•    Pump
For longer tours, we recommend that you also take spare spokes for the front and rear wheels with fixings as well as a torch for emergency light.
Enough Food and Drink
So that the rider does not run out of puff, it is important to carry enough energy giving drinks and foods. In order to avoid low sugar levels as a result of low carbohydrate intake, it is advisable to have something to drink every 20 minutes. After at most 1 hour of cycling you should have an easily digestible snack. A midday break should be allowed for in longer tours.

First Aid for Injuries
A fall can happen at any time: a first aid kit with additional disposable gloves and cleaning cloths should be standard. Liquids help with muscle cramps, as well as magnesium and additional stretching of the affected muscle.

And to prevent anything  worse: always wear a helmet!

Clothing to Protect against Wind and Weather
The variety of nature in the Bavarian Forest is matched by the variety of weather – especially in the mountains. Bright, sunny weather can quickly turn in a dark storm with high winds. A rain jacket and change of clothes can protect you from rain and falling temperatures.

An Overview of the Main Emergency Numbers
Make sure that you take a mobile phone with you. In an emergency you can summon help quickly. As long as you are not in an area with no signal of course. Another reason not to go on mountain bike tours alone.

Here are the most important European emergency numbers:

From a mobile, without prefix/code:
•    Europe: 112
This number is free and calls are possible even without a SIM card.
•    Switzerland:114

From a landline or mobile phone with local code:
•    Germany 19222
•    Austria 140
•    Switzerland 144
•    Italy 118
