The Right Cycling Technique: Uphill and Downhill on the Großer Arber
Going uphill easily, coming downhill safely and a relaxing ride on the flat: the right cycling technique makes even the most demanding tours through ArberLand enjoyable. The best place to try this out is the Großer Arber.
Mental attitude is especially important for long uphills. Pedalling and breathing easily. Move your body weight forward in order to put pressure on the front wheel. If you can see obstacles such as roots or rocks, then increase your pedalling speed a few metres in advance.
If you are on a steep downhill, some effort is needed, especially if the trail is very narrow. It is important to move your body weight to the back, to brake sensitively and take a clear line down the track. You don’t need the saddle when going downhill – a mountain biker can only react quickly when standing and move the bodyweight backwards quickly.
If you lose your nerve when going downhill, it is OK to dismount. In order to gain self confidence, it is a good idea to practice downhill technique on wide trails.
